Dental

The clinic sees retirees on a space-available basis only for dental emergencies. 

The clinic is currently only manned to treat the needs of the active duty population. We strive to take care of the needs of AD dependents as well. Within these two populations there are over 500 patients with diagnosed treatment needs who take priority over retirees per AFMAN 47-101 (Managing Dental Services). We recommend retirees find a local dental home for all routine care.

We try to never cancel appointments. However, sometimes this can happen to accommodate the urgent needs of an active duty service member, to treat a dental emergency, or due to provider availability (illness, emergency leave, etc.). We’ll try to reschedule your appointment at the earliest opportunity, and apologize for the inconvenience.  

 

A dental emergency consists of trauma, uncontrolled bleeding, infection or swelling, and/or severe pain.

If you or a child are experiencing uncontrolled bleeding, infection or swelling, and/or severe pain, please call the appointment line at 06565-61-8333 and follow the prompts. Please don’t use this option after duty hours to schedule appointments. The on-call provider will determine whether an after-hours appointment is required to meet your needs. In a life-threatening emergency, please proceed to the nearest emergency room or call 911 on base or 112 off-base.  

We will not always be able to address elective care. Our primary focus is to eliminate disease and ensure proper function for all our patients. Active-duty dependents may choose at any time to be seen by an off-base provider. 

Legally, the Dental Clinic can’t refer you to any specific private provider or group practice off-base, including the private clinic that recently opened on Ramstein Air Base. Dependents should use a provider covered by United Concordia when possible. Contact your insurance directly for specific coverage-related questions.

Visit the TRICARE Dental Program website and use the Find a Dentist query to see a list of TRICARE OCONUS Preferred Dentists. If a TOPD is used, dependents can expect to pay the cost share portion. Dentists on the TOPD list will file claims on your behalf. Members are encouraged to contact United Concordia for information about maximums, limitations, and exclusions in their dental coverage before utilizing the service.

You can get care from any licensed and authorized dentist in the region. Dependents are under no obligation to seek care from TOPDs in any OCONUS location, even if they are listed on the directory. Dependents can find a dental provider on their own and receive care from them in any OCONUS location. However, the patient will have to pay up front and then file the bill with United Concordia afterwards.

Spangdahlem has one pediatric dentist for all patients under 10 years old. Due to high demand, there is currently a four-month waiting list. In dental emergencies, children will be seen by our sick call dentist, who will coordinate care with the pediatric dentist. 

 

Spangdahlem has one orthodontist, but no new patients will be accepted until the fall of 2025. The new provider will begin evaluations at that time. In many cases, braces are considered elective treatment and cannot be guaranteed to all members. The Dental Clinic front desk team can provide information on the best avenues to pursue care on the economy based on your DEROS for anyone interested. 

No dependents are treated at the Ramstein AB dental clinic, except for braces and pediatrics. However, this is only for members assigned to Ramstein. Active duty service members are referred to the military clinic on a limited basis for select specialty services.

Please DO NOT cancel your dental appointment using the MHS GENESIS Patient Portal. It does not communicate with our dental scheduling program, so canceling through the Patient Portal may result in a failed appointment.
