Pharmacy
We fill new prescriptions and refills at no cost for covered medications for beneficiaries validated and registered through the TRICARE office. Patients without TRICARE medical coverage are required to provide Other Health Insurance information before picking up medications. Prescriptions are billed to the civilian insurance on file or directly to the patient. It is the patient’s sole responsibility to understand their civilian prescription coverage and associated copays.

Filling New Prescriptions
We fill prescriptions from both military and civilian providers.
Providers from Our Facility
Your provider may submit a prescription directly to the pharmacy during or after your appointment.
- You can activate the prescription(s) and wait, or
- You can come back later to pick them up.
Civilian Providers
If you have prescriptions from a TRICARE-authorized civilian provider:
- The provider can submit an electronic prescription to our pharmacy, or
- You can hand-carry a written prescription to our pharmacy. Note: This is the least preferred option but required for host nation provider prescriptions.
German Civilian Handwritten Prescriptions
Prescriptions must meet U.S. standards for prescribing. Please ensure the prescription contains the following information:
- Provider’s name, address, and contact information
- Date prescription was written
- Patient’s name and date of birth (*address for controlled medications*)
- U.S. medication name (trade or generic), strength, directions for use (in English), quantity, and approved refills to dispense
- Provider’s stamp and signature so pharmacist can identify the provider
Please see our
guide on German prescription requirements.
To submit an electronic prescription:
Ask your provider to select the:
- Pharmacy name: DOD SPANGDAHLEM GERMANY PHARMACY
- NCPDP/NPI number: 8110265/1083783294
If you hand-carry a written prescription:
Check in at the front window. Written prescriptions will have a 1 duty day turnaround for processing and only be accepted if they are written to U.S. prescriptions standards. If additional information is required, processing times will be longer.

Picking Up Your Prescriptions
You’ll need a valid uniformed services ID card to pick up a prescription. This includes children aged 13 and older. Prescriptions not picked up will be returned to stock after
10 calendar days. If you can’t pick up your prescription within this timeframe, please contact the pharmacy. If you’re picking up a prescription for another person, please bring that person’s valid uniformed services ID (or photocopy, digital picture).
Patients may pick up their medications by coming to the pharmacy and waiting in line. Please come only after you have received a message via Q-Anywhere that your prescriptions are ready or after the designated time given to you by the pharmacy staff.
Drug Take Back Program
Proper disposal of prescription drugs reduces the risk of unintentional poisoning, drug abuse, and environmental harm. In general, German regulations allow for medications to be placed in residents’ black waste bins for disposal or taken to a local apotheke. There are also mobile hazardous waste collection vehicles that can be utilized on a scheduled basis. Never dispose of medication down the toilet or sink.
Spangdahlem pharmacy will not accept prescription medications for disposal. For disposal of an unwanted or an unneeded drug, please check the following website for local guidance on prescription disposal: https://arzneimittelentsorgung.de/home/#c5.
Prescription Transfers
You may transfer prescriptions to our military pharmacy if you have valid prescriptions with refills remaining at another DOD or civilian pharmacy. This must be initiated in person at the pharmacy window. For transfers from a civilian pharmacy, please expect a longer turnaround time (typically 5 duty days) due to time zone constraints with state side pharmacies.
Filling Prescriptions at a German Apotheke (Pharmacy)
Germany does not allow medications to be imported. Therefore, ExpressScripts Mail Order utilization is not available. Patients may choose to fill medications at a local German Apotheke and pay out of pocket. These expenses may be reimbursed, but please speak to a TRICARE representative for more information on this process or visit
Pharmacy Claims - TRICARE. Local German prescriptions not written to U.S. standards may only be filled at a German Apotheke.
